MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the South Carolina Forestry Commission said Friday afternoon that a wildfire along the county line of Georgetown and Charleston has been 100 percent contained.
Scott Hawkins, spokesman for the SCFC said significant progress was made on Friday, especially in the Carolina Bay area. He said the fire was officially 100 percent contained at 3:30 p.m.
Forestry commission units worked several troublesome areas on Friday where the fire was least contained. Officials also and worked with local fire departments to patrol for hot spots.
Hawkins said that as of 11 a.m. on Friday the fire was 95 percent contained and that improving weather conditions, including an increase in humidity and a decrease in wind, would assist in controlling the fire.
Based on preliminary estimates, at least $1.5 million in timber was lost to the fire.
