The Role of Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie played a major role in several wars from 1776 until 1947.
It's been rebuilt three times after being reduced to rubble during times of war.
In December 1860 South Carolina seceded from the Union, and Federal troops relocated from Fort Moultrie to the much stronger Fort Sumter.
Confederate troops then moved in and took control of Moultrie and following the first shots of the Civil War, took control of Fort Sumter.
Much like Fort Sumter, Confederate soldiers fled Fort Moultrie in February of 1865. Five years later, the army moved in and modernized the fort.
Fort Moultrie was decommissioned in 1960 and turned over to the National Park Service to live on as one of the most visited treasures of war.
