The Sofa Super Store Fire will be the cover story in next month's Fire Chief magazine.
The magazine's editorial director had some harsh words for the Chief Rusty Thomas until she met him herself.
"Obviously he's been through a lot and the chief has a lot going on right now.", said
the editor of Fire Chief Magazine, Janet Wilmoth.
She says she could see that Chief Thomas is troubled by what happened on June 18th, but she also said she is very impressed with him. Her meeting with him came after a strongly worded editorial she wrote in the August issue. In the piece, she said she was angry that in this day, too many chiefs believe that the way they fought fires 30 years ago still works. She even quoted Chief Thomas when he said quote "thats how we fight fires in Charleston."
"After talking to him I think it needs to be put in context he said those within 48 hours of the fire. That's substantial. He's dealing with a substantial loss," she said.
Wilmoth has interveiwed fire chiefs from all over the country for over 20 years and although she feels for the position Chief Thomas is in, she's angry and feels the 9 men who died could have been spared.
"I'm angry any time a firefighter dies and it could have been prevented. Last year we lost 106 firefighters and this year already numbers have escalated. The majority of firefighter deaths can be prevented," Wilmoth said.
Wilmoth wouldn't reveal what she and the chief talked about. She also interviewed Mayor Riley for the ariticle which will appear in the October edition of Fire chief Magazine.
