The union representing Charleston firefighters has endorsed Mayoral candidate William Gregorie in his bid to oust incumbent Mayor Joe Riley.
Union President Roger Yow was sharply critical of Riley's handling of the aftermath of the Sofa Super Store fire that killed nine firemen.
"We are appalled at actions of Mayor Riley. He still keeps his eyes and ears closed to the facts," Yow said at an afternoon news conference. Riley continues to express unqualified support for Fire Chief Rusty Thomas despite an investigative report that found the department below standards in many key areas.
OSHA recently ordered the city to pay a more than nine thousand dollar fine for safety violations at the fire. The most serious violation was a flawed command system. Yow told reporters at the news conference that the fines should have been higher. He accused Chief Thomas of trying to interfere with the investigation.
