A Patriotic Icon Needs A Boost

Powerful and majestic, are a few words which immediately come to mind when referring to bald eagles. For one bald eagle, this isn't the case, that's why Awendaw has stepped in for some much needed mending.
The symbol of American freedom was found injured on a South Carolina roadside. Thankfully a Good Samaritan made sure the bald eagle got to the International Center for Birds of Prey.
“This eagle had three large wounds on the chest and body and some secondary complications,” said Grace Gasper, International Center for Birds of Prey.
Insects brought infection, but there is also a potentially more serious problem.
“The bird may also have, based on the x-rays we did this morning, an injury to the left elbow joint,” added Gasper.
Bald eagles are not uncommon at the center.
They have treated as many as 18 in one year. Many times birds are injured through interaction with humans, but not this time.
“Given the time of year and the fact that the breeding season is beginning for eagles, it's certainly possible that it was a territorial dispute,” said Gasper.
The international center for birds of prey treats injured animals like the bald eagle, but they also educate.
“Making people aware of the role of these birds in our system, the importance of these birds, and even more importantly the role we play in the issues that these birds have,” said Stephen Schabel, International Center for Birds of Prey.
