Fire Damage Spreads To More People
posted 3:57 pm Sun November 18, 2007 - Goose Creek
As families work to get their lives back together following the Goose Creek apartment fire, more problems begin to arise. Two more residents of the Greenslake complex are not allowed back into their home.
Damage from the fire is easy to see. Two apartments, home to parents and their children, are destroyed. But the effects of this fire spread beyond the flames and heat. “Her unit has been condemned because of the amount of water damage, no electricity, no water,” said Shelly Jo Wright.

One of the units belongs to Doris Landreth. On Friday she gave us a look at her living situation. The carpet was saturated with water and the place had no power. “I am fortunate, I'm thankful it didn't spread and I'm thankful no one was hurt,” said Landreth

ABC News 4 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Just a few days later, it's a different story. Landreth is living in a hotel for the time being. Wright, President of the Home Owners Association, says the county building inspector toured the home and declared it's uninhabitable. “She is confused and dazed and of course she wants to be back in a familiar environment,” said Wright

One of the biggest problems we can't show you with a camera, the smell is nauseating. Mold and bacteria are growing inside and many people say it's an unhealthy living situation. “We have refrigerator full of food and it's rotting,” said Wright.

Being forced from your home by a fire is nothing new to Wright. She lost her home in blaze at the Greenslake complex back in 2002. “The first couple of days are traumatic, all you remember is seeing the flames and the fear of losing your loved ones,” said Wright

There are no open units for Landreth at Greenslake and Wright is hoping to find a nearby place for her to stay. Since this tragedy, the community has shown its support through donations. Wright is hoping for one more donation, a new home.

Fire officials are still investigating what caused the fire. Wright says an arson officer will examine the area on Monday.
