posted 5:09 pm Fri November 30, 2007 - Columbia, SC
A group that supports flying the Confederate flag is calling two Republican presidential candidates "scalawags and carpetbaggers" for criticizing the flag during this week's GOP debate. Sons of Confederate Veterans is offended by remarks made by former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

The group issued a statement Friday that said the road to the White House hits a dead end when candidates "smear the good name of our Southern ancestors."

ABC News 4 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Romney says he doesn't recognize the flag. Thompson said he doesn't believe everyone who flies the flag is a racist but says for many Americans, it's a symbol of racism.

The flag once flew atop the state Capitol.

I am a proud Mississippian, and take offense to Romney's comments about the Confederate "Battle" Flag. He needs to do thorough research about this flag. This is our heritage, why is it that blacks have their heritage, MLK, Malcom X,Quansa,Black History month, etc., but when it comes to a legitimate heritage such as the Conferderate Flag, it is considered to be 'racist'. They're the only ones who make this a race issue. If anyone needs to get over something, it is the blacks, they are not slaves now, and have no idea what their ancestors actually went through as slaves. They need to get a life and stop picking fights where there are none. I have people who fought for the South under that flag. Leave us alone, Romney is a 'yankee' and has no idea about the TRUE South. Debate an issue that actually makes a difference in this country. Don't pick on one state because we refuse to bow down to political pressure to take down a flag that stands for OUR freedom as Southerners. He will not get my vote for two reasons, that is a huge reason, and the fact that he is a Mormon. They profess God, but they don't believe in Salvation through Jesus Christ. The believe in only good works get you into heaven. So, he is off of my list of potential candidates, and so is Rudy, because he is a non-conservative republican. Right now, Huckabee is looking really great to me. He shares the same values I was raised to believe in.
