CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The line stretched for about three blocks. Some even waited since 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon to get their hands on a free 50 dollar Piggly Wiggly grocery gift card. Jimmie Harris spent nearly 12 hours in line to get his.
"It's a good thing they're doing this you can see people are in need it's a good chance for people to put some food in they house," said Harris.
The Star Gospel Mission on Meeting Street handed out a 1000 of the cards on a first come first serve basis. They've been doing it for at least a dozen years. Harris says in this economy many folks just need a little help.
"A lot of people unemployed…not a lot of jobs in this city so this is a good thing here," Harris said.
Donald Heyward plans to pick the necessities with his 50 bucks. He says every dollar makes a difference.
"It's going to mean groceries in my house," he said.
The gift cards are providing food, help and hope for those in need this time of year.
"It's an incredible feeling because obviously we're doing what the Star Gospel Mission has done for 106 years and that is helping to assist the east side community people in need whatever that need may be," said Pastor Bill Christian.
