Snow And The Coldest Air Of The Season On The Way

Posted: Updated:

Snow and the coldest air of the season are on the way. Very cold air has been trapped and getting colder up in northern Canada, Alaska and the North Pole. That cold air is going to head south and start to move into Oklahoma over the weekend and get even colder next week.

At the same time we have two storm systems headed our way. Storm #1 will cross Texas over the weekend and cause rain and snow to develop in Oklahoma possibly as early as Saturday night, but most likely Sunday and Sunday night. 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall south of I-40 including McAlester, Muskogee, Poteau and Fort Smith, AR. While areas north of I-40 including Tulsa could get less than an inch if we get any at all.

Storm #2 crosses Oklahoma on Monday bringing 1 to 3 inches of snow to areas north of I-40 including Tulsa, Bartlesville, Vinita and Miami. Areas south of I-40 could get less. These snow estimates are subject to change. The snow could continue to fall as late as Tuesday, but most of it should come down on Monday.

As for the Arctic air, the worst will really hit us during the work week starting Monday. We will stay below freezing with highs only in the 20s, lows in the teens and single digits, and wind chills in the single digits and possibly near to below zero. We will finally get above freezing by the end of the workweek, but another Arctic assault could hit us next weekend.

Make sure you do everything you can to stay safe and warm during this cold spell. Dress in layers including a hat and mittens. Disconnect hoses. And drive carefully.
