Darius Rucker speaks to MUSC grads

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Just call him Dr. Rucker.

Country music star and Hootie and the Blowfish front man Darius Rucker got a special honor on Friday. He welcomed the Lowcountry's newest medical professionals.

The Medical University of South Carolina held its graduation ceremony on Friday morning, and Rucker delivered the commencement speech.

"Today is a day I'll never forget," Rucker said. "I mean like I said in my speech, the Medical University was such a huge part of my life growing up. ...I mean to be here and to get to give a speech is one of those things I never even let myself dream of. That was an amazing day."

Rucker said MUSC is special to him because his mother's experience as a long-time employee and his recent role on the children's board.

He was given an honorary diploma that he said he will hang in the foyer of his home.

"That way everyone will know to all me Dr. Rucker," he said.
