Your weekend planner should overflow with fun

Lowcountry Leisure: By Ashley Lindquist

This weekend is a prime example why we love the Lowcountry! With picture perfect, summer-like weather and enough events to suit anyone's fancy, your weekend planner should be overflowing with fun.

"The Toughest Two Minutes In Sports" makes its first ever stop in Charleston this weekend. Events began on Friday and continue on Saturday. Firefighters from across the country will gather at Citadel Mall to compete in a five-event obstacle course testing their fitness and agility. The competition heats up with challenges for local firefighters, event sponsors and even the kids. Come cheer on our local and national heroes on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

If you've been searching for a way to help with flood relief that swamped the Southeast earlier this month, look no further than your neighborhood PetSmart. Charleston Animal Society, Pet Helpers, Doc Williams, Francis Willis, Lowcountry Animal Rescue and Feline Freedom Coalition have joined together to host an Adopt-a-thon. The event began on Friday and continues on Saturday at PetSmart in Summerville. Our local animal shelters are over capacity with furry friends they've taken in from Tennessee and from right here at home. The Adopt-a-thon gives you an opportunity to paw around with the pets and pick one that's perfect for you and your family to take home!

Head out to The Joe all weekend to see the Charleston RiverDogs take on the Augusta Green Jackets! As always, Saturday is Go Local Saturday so all Tri-County residents get $1 off with a valid ID. Games start at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday and at 5:05 p.m. Sunday. The final game of the seven game series is Monday morning at 11:05.

Film fanatics across the Lowcountry have been hitting the big screen since Wednesday for the 4th Annual Charleston International Film Festival. Filmmakers, writers and actors from our area and from all across the world are debuting more than 70 films at the American Theater, Cinebarre Mt. Pleasant and the Hippodrome Widescreen and Performing Arts Center. After each night, be sure to stick around for panel discussions and an after party. If you haven't made it to a screening yet, don't worry! The festival runs through Sunday.

MUSC Children's Hospital holds its 2nd Annual Angel Walk on Saturday to raise money for medulloblastoma research. Hit the pavement with other walkers and runners while enjoying the trail through historic downtown Charleston. The Angel Walk kicks off at Hampton Park at 8 a.m. and wraps up there with a finish festival until noon. Breakfast and lunch will be available, and the kids can enjoy jump castles, face painting and music.

It's the Mother of all Bouts, and it's taking over McAlister Fieldhouse Saturday night. The Lowcountry All-Stars and the Bruisin' Betties battle it out against the Uncivil Warriors of Richmond, Virginia and Myrtle Beach's Palmetto State Rollergirls in their second doubleheader of the season. With raffles, face painting and an after party at Club Patrick's, the event promises to be fun for the entire family! Doors open at 3:30 p.m., and the ladies skate into action at 4:30 and 6:00. A portion of all the proceeds go to benefit The Magdalene House.

Don't own a boat? Don't sweat it! You can still enjoy Sunday's summer like temperatures with a day on the water. The Charleston Yacht Affair sails into the Charleston City Marina on Sunday from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Ticket holders will tour the luxurious yachts, sample menus from Fleet Landing, Suede Supper Club and Hall's Chophouse and enjoy live music and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit Communities in Schools.
