CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston Police Department want to help those in the community spend more time honoring fallen soldiers on Memorial Day and less time managing issues caused by often preventable traffic incidents.
Officials said in many cases death and injuries result from Memorial Day accidents -- accidents that often involve alcohol or drug consumption, speeding, lack of seatbelt and distracted drivers.
In response, the Charleston Police Department will deploy a city-wide high visibility campaign this weekend. Officials say there will be multiple safety checkpoint locations and mobile DUI and radar enforcement throughout the city.
Drivers are asked to exercise patience, caution, and good judgment. Officials say driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be tolerated and ask those who plan on consuming alcohol to plan ahead with designated drivers.
If you spot unsafe driving you are asked to call the Charleston Police Department at 843-577-7434.
