CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Folks living on Sunnyvale Road in West Ashley seem a bit calmer, now that the man police say is responsible for a carjacking and rape, is behind bars.

"I was relieved. I was really…that's all I can say. I was relieved that he was caught," said the woman who says she saw the victim crying and screaming after the assault. She did not want to reveal her name.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested Marion Lamont Brown, Jr. at his home on Johns Island. Police say Brown carjacked a woman in a West Ashley parking lot, forced her to drive her car to a near by neighborhood and raped her in the back yard of a vacant home.

"He just really disturbed the neighborhood. Just gave us, the neighborhood a bad name by coming into the neighborhood and doing something like that," the woman said.

Brown is being charged with sexual assault, larceny and assault and battery. Neighbors say they can finally put their guards down.

"I can go to sleep and everything in peace," said a neighbor.

Brown will go through bond court on Thursday afternoon.
