Holy City put on historic watch status

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- The Holy City has been put on notice. It could become one of the 11 most endangered historic places.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation puts out the list. So far the city is not on it, but has been added to its watch status.

The group blames the cruise industry, saying the ships threaten the historic character of Charleston.

"A lot of people look to Charleston for how to do historic preservation, how to manage tourism, how to have a livable city and Charleston has set the bar very high," says John Hildreth with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Hildreth says the organization is working with city officials to complete an independent study that looks at the costs and benefits of the cruise industry.

"So a lot of people are looking to Charleston and how we deal with cruise ship tourism," he says.

The bottom line-- the city can be taken off the watch list, if progress is made.
