COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina unemployment went up slightly in May, reversing a four-month downward trend.

The state Department of Employment and Workforce said Friday that the May jobless rate was 10 percent, up from 9.8 percent in April.

Nationally, unemployment also went up slightly, from 9 percent to 9.1 percent.

Officials say the increase is typical for this time of year, as new college and high school graduates enter the labor pool and more people look for seasonal, tourism-related work.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the Anderson area experienced one of the largest employment percentage gains nationally, increasing 5.1 percentage points from April 2010 to April of this year.

South Carolina's unemployment rate had decreased steadily from a peak of 12.5 percent in January 2010.
