CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The death of a Lowcountry soldier killed in Afghanistan was announced on Monday by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Officials say 33-year-old Sergeant First Class (SFC) Alvin A. Boatwright of Lodge, S.C. was killed on June 18 from injuries suffered during a vehicle roll-over.

"SFC Boatwright is the guy people want to be like," friend Nate Mosley said.

The two have known each other since high school. After graduation, they went their separate ways. It was the military that brought them back together.

Mosley says he was a Drill Sergeant and Boatwright was a recruiter.

"I would email him and ask him what he was sending me to train."

Like most careers in the Army, the men moved on to different jobs within the service. They also went their separate ways. That is, until Facebook came out.

"He was one of my first Facebook friends."

The social media site helped the two catch each other up on their lives. Boatwright told Mosley he was going to Germany and then would deploy to Afghanistan.

"He was an Non-Commissioned Officer that was very dependable. If any soldier had an issue, he would not stop until that soldier's issue was taken care of. Every soldier that he came in contact with wanted to be just like him."

Mosley also said Boatwright was a motorcycle enthusiast and very active in that social circle.

"He would challenge anyone in anything, especially when it came to doing flips. He was a very outgoing person."

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
