Copper could cut down on infections

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- It's popular with thieves because of it's cost, but now copper could be used to cut down on the number of hospital infections.

A researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina says replacing commonly used hospital room items like bed rails and tables with copper-- may reduce the amount of harmful bacteria by 97 percent.

The five million dollar study was presented to the World Health Organization's first international conference of prevention and infection control.

Doctors say hospital infections kill about 100,000 people a year.
