ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two people have been confirmed dead following a plane crash that summoned the attention of several emergency response agencies on Wednesday.

The crash happened at approximately 6:19 p.m. near Dewees Island.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the plane was an ultralight zodiac.

The plane reportedly had two passengers -- one originally listed in extremely serious condition, the other in serious condition.

Shortly after confirming a helicopter was en route to pick up the two victims and transport them to MUSC, Charleston EMS spokesman Don Lundy called to report the plane's two passengers had died before they even made it on the rescue chopper.

Lundy said the two deceased crash victims were the plane's only passengers. There is no search for additional victims. IOP mayor Richard F. Cronin said one victim was male, the other female.

Officials say a fisherman in the area pulled the two people from the water.

The plane is currently secured on the shore of Dewees Island. Official say it will stay there until the FAA has completed an investigation.

Officials with the Charleston County Rescue Squad, Isle of Palms Police Department, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the incident.
