CAINHOY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Local firefighters and the South Carolina Forestry Commission are battling a large brush fire near Interstate 526.
Nicknamed the Beech Hill Fire by forestry commission officials, the fire began as a controlled burn several weeks ago. Officials say it reignited.
As of Monday morning the fire had not threatened any homes in the area. Officials say the fire area is about 225 acres and moderate fire activity is expected for most of the day.
Residual smoke in the area is expected as a result of current and earlier burning.
Forestry commission crews are also battling a 1,374 acre fire in Horry County they say is 70 percent contained.
A burn ban is in effect in Horry, Marion and Georgetown counties. A Red Flag Alert (suggestion not to burn) has been issued for every other county in the state.
