SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – When it came time for AT&T to release its yearly update yellow pages directory, the company wanted to represent the local community. That's why they held a competition for local artists in the Lowcountry.

"I wanted something simplistic," local artist Laura Martindale said.

Her photograph of an azalea, representing the Summerville Family YMCA Flowertown Festival, now graces the cover of the 2011 directory. She also designed the logo for the 40th festival and said it will be used on billboards promoting the event.

Martindale has spent the last 19 years in the Lowcountry and majored in art at Coker College.  She says the contest was a great opportunity.

"It's great publicity. God has opened so many doors for me. I just continue to grow my business."

Speaking of business, AT&T used this competition to promote their latest publication.

"We thought it would be a perfect opportunity to demonstrate and highlight the event, the Flowertown Festival and what it can do for the community," Jack Mitchell, regional director for external affairs and legislative AT&T South Carolina said.

More than 60,000 copies of the phonebook will be distributed starting next week. The directory will also be available for new business and new residents throughout the greater Summerville area.

Mayor Bill Collins was also on hand for today's unveiling.

"We were delighted for AT&T to select Summerville," the newly-elected Mayor said. "Summerville is a family friendly community and the festival is an integral part of that."

The YMCA's major fundraising event features more than 200 artists who display their work on the grounds of Azalea Park. Attendees also enjoy food, fun and activities for the whole family.

The 2012 Festival is scheduled for March 30-April 1st. More than 200,000 people are expected to attend.

Martindale will be selling pieces of her work at next year's festival. She said she has always been involved with the YMCA.

"I am amazed at the things that have happened in my life," the graphic designer and painter said.
