KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – A chainsaw and hand tools were needed to remove a child that was stuck between an elevator car and elevator shaft on Kiawah Island.
The St. Johns Fire and Rescue Department, Charleston County Emergency Medical Services, Charleston County Rescue, and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office were dispatched just after noon Tuesday.
The child was reportedly stuck between an elevator car and the elevator shaft at a residential dwelling. Officials say the child's leg was lodged between the elevator car and shaft, with the child's body hanging below the elevator car. The father was reportedly holding on to the child's leg.
Firefighters reportedly placed a ladder in the elevator shaft to reach the child. We're told it took crews 25 minutes to free the child. Hand tools and a chain saw were reportedly used to free the child, who was conscious and alert during the incident.
The cause is still under investigation.
