Bills paid, but projects could be delayed

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV)-- The bills are paid, at least for now. But future projects for the Department of Transportation may be delayed.

The state DOT says it is no longer overdue on payments to highway contractors. It's caught up on invoices later than the allowed 30 day window.

The agency recently got a $52 million advance from the Federal Highway Administration to cover the bills.

But to make sure the agency doesn't get behind again, DOT spokesman Pete Poore says it may delay work on major construction projects. He says any potential delay would be negotiated with the contractor and will not affect work already underway.

Last week, the agency announced it would defer $24 million in small projects statewide such as resurfacing.
