Irene causes major damage to Lowcountry beach - WCIV-TV | ABC News 4 - Charleston News, Sports, Weather

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston County park was forced to temporarily close Saturday, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission closed the Folly Beach County Park at the end of the island because of severe damage.

According to the park's acting manager Cole Thomas, a portion of the parking lot was washed away as a result of the high tide and storm surge.

Thomas also says a number of boardwalks and walkways are either broken or gone all together.

"There is nothing we could do to protect it. We just watched it wash away," says Thomas.

As a result of the storm damage, a number of areas around the park are covered in caution tape.  The park will remained closed until further notice.

A staff meeting will be held on Monday to determine plans for further cleanup and re-opening.

With more high tides expected this week, Thomas hopes they can keep the park from sustaining any further damage.
