Travelers can expect heightened security this weekend

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- You may not see it, but the TSA will be tightening up security as the ten year anniversary of 9/11 approaches.

On top of the regular security measures that travelers usually aren't aware of (cameras, closed circuit television, and explosive detection devices for checked baggage), the Transportation Security Administration will be adding extra security this weekend.

Mary Schiavo, former Chief Investigator for the Department of Transportation, appeared on Good Morning Charleston Thursday morning. "There will be dog patrols out, additional explosive detection equipment. The TSA has put pretty much all hands on deck," she said.

Schiavo also assured that the level of security over the past decade has improved. "Having the TSA take over from the FAA was a tremendous improvement," she said, "Just having a professional organization who is dedicated to law enforcement is a huge improvement."

She does admit, however, that there are bugs in the system. "There is a lot more work to be done, particularly on things like cargo and cargo planes and general aviation, private aviation - a huge hole we have to close."

As for upcoming changes in the way travelers go through security, Schiavo says don't hold your breath. Technology will have to catch up to our desire to keep our shoes on, which Schiavo says could take months or even years, adding, "Keep those loafers handy."
