Praying for unity ahead of 9/11 anniversary

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Religious leaders from around the country are calling on their congregations to use 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to reflect on forgiveness, coexistence with other faiths and national unity.

At the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, Imam Shamsi Ali called on hundreds of Muslims gathered at the mosque Friday to be ambassadors of their faith and to engage their fellow Americans as neighbors.

He finished his sermon by inviting Jewish and Christian leaders to speak.

It was one of many interfaith events being held as the country reflects on the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

After the service, Kevin Kareem said he hoped leaders would emphasize "common ground" among faiths. He said it was the only way to confront the evil of 9/11.
