MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Mt. Pleasant man and his estranged wife are being charged with fraud and making illegal campaign contributions.

According to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, two indictments previously returned by a federal grand jury were unsealed on Monday.

The first accuses Mount Pleasant native Jian-Yun Dong and one of his companies, Vaxima, Inc., of submitting false claims for payment of federal grant money. The indictment also accuses Dong and his company of using grant money for prohibited purposes.

A second indictment accuses the 54-year-old and his estranged wife, Danher Wang, 52, with conspiring to make illegal campaign contributions in the names of other people after they exceeded their maximum contribution allowance.

According to the indictment, the two made prohibited contributions totaling $16,770 to "Lindsay Graham for Senate" in 2007, and $15,000 to "Fund for America's Future" in 2009. The indictment goes on to say that Dong and Wang attempted to make the contributions without being detected by the FEC and Senator Graham's campaign staff.

Officials say Dong also made false statements to law enforcement agents and that he attempted to influence the testimony of a witness.
