Work zone signs designed to lessen stress

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C (WCIV) -- Construction signs designed to take the stress away.

The town of Mount Pleasant has placed 18, new signs in work zones along Highway 17. They don't offer a warning or vital information, but they may make you laugh.

"I'm fine with that," one driver said, reading a sign. "Come on in after an hour you're hardly notice the loud banging and shaking tables!"

"I love them," said another driver. "Because they're cute, they're chirpy."

The widespread, constant even, construction on Jonnie Dodds may cause its fair share of headaches for drivers. That's just one reason the town created them. They're part of the 'No Hard Hat Required' plan officials have in place to ease the public through the Highway 17 transition.

Admittedly leaders say they want to bring some levity to the circumstances.

"It's trying to make light of a difficult situation, I think that's always a good thing," Sarah Shier said.

But the inconvenience from the construction has caused concerned.

"It's certainly more difficult for my customers to get here on occasion," said Marshall Walls.

The town says it's looking out for business owners like Walls, at Easy Rider Bikes. At the bottom of each sign there's a slogan or reminder to 'Shop Mount Pleasant'.

"The town needs to sort of do whatever it can to eliminate the anxiety and the stresses that take place on the road," Walls said. "Probably the easiest way to do it is with a little bit of tongue and cheek and a little bit of laughter."

The signs were put in place over a three week period. They'll likely stick around for the duration of the road project and poke a little fun in the process.

The town has also created a new position, a public liaison to hear concerns from regular people or business owners about the construction.

The 18 signs cost about $200 a piece.
