CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- NFL hall of famer and Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis died Saturday at the age of 82.

Davis served as commissioner of the American Football League and Defensive line coach at the citadel from 1957 to 1959.

As an owner, Davis lead the Raiders to three Superbowl Championships and was credited with helping turn the NFL into the most successful sports league in American History.

During his time at The Citadel, Davis was known for his tenacious recruiting efforts.

Citadel Hall of Famer, Connie Tuza says he was a sophomore when Davis came in to be his offensive line coach.

"I graduated in 1958, and in that time I've never seen a more accomplished recruiter than Coach Davis," Tuza said. "Coach Davis' philosophy was this; lets get them down here anyway we can and see if they can stick it out."

Davis was perhaps best known for his trademark saying, "Just win baby."

Tuza also remembers how Davis wrote him an excellent letter of recommendation in 2005, that helped him get inducted into The Citadel's Hall Of Fame.

The Oakland raider say Davis passed away at his California home Saturday.
