CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It took news of the shooting of a five-year-old girl on Pierpont Avenue for the victims of a recent break-in to come forward, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Office Major James Brady.

Investigators say five armed suspects forced themselves into an apartment on Dogwood Road Saturday night at approximately 9 p.m. and demanded money. One of the victims told investigators they stole cash and an IPOD.

"The victim reported the incident after he learned of the shooting incident on Pierpont Avenue," Major Brady said in a release Thursday.

A man who says he lives in the apartment where the incident occurred, who did not want to be identified, says he woke up Saturday night to find the five men in his apartment. He says when he and his roommates heard about the shooting of Allison Griffor, just blocks away, two days later, he became frightened.

"I'm still scared now," the man said. "Barricaded the door and locked the windows. The only thing you really can do."

Investigators arrested Devoun Bennett and charged him with first degree burglary, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Brady says a bond hearing was held on Wednesday, resulting in a $25,000 surety bond for possession of a weapon charge, $75,000 for the armed robbery charge, and no bond set for the burglary charge.

"At this time there is no connection with this incident to the October 25, 2011 Pierpont Road shooting," Major Brady said. "Investigation continues."
