CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- Comcast customers may be seeing red when FEMA, the FCC, and the NWS team up to broadcast the first ever nation-wide test of the Emergency Alert System.
The test will take place Wednesday, November 9th at 2pm and could last between 60 seconds and three minutes. It will be seen on all local, cable, and satellite TV stations across the country, as well as radio.
The purpose of this test is to help determine if the national-level system will work as designed, should officials ever need to send a national alert.
Comcast has notified its customers that the test could cause some disruptions including:
• Interruption or loss of DVR recordings
• Loss of programming after the test (they advise customers to change channels and then change back to fix this glitch)
• An elongated EAS message (longer than 5 mins) in which case customers are advised to reboot their cable boxes.
Comcast also advises that the guide data and Video On Demand content will take some time to fully restore. They ask that customers wait 20 minutes after the test before choosing Video On Demand to avoid other errors with the cable box.
