Coastal Carolina fair had lower turnout than last year

Posted: Updated:

LADSON, S.C. (WCIV) - The 55th edition of the Coastal Carolina Fair ended this Saturday after running at full capacity for 10 days. The fried food, fun, and rides lured lots of people to the Exchange Club of Ladson, but turnout wasn't as good as last year.

Joe Bolchoz, media relations director for the Coastal Carolina Fair, said the fair was down about eight percent; 231, 000 last year versus about 217, 000 this year.

"We think it's a little bit to do with the economy," he said. "We chatted with our friends in Columbia at the State Fair and they were down about 10 percent. Vendors that visit us say it has been a hit and miss across the country with the economy."

Organizers are expecting a final total from the 10-day Lowcountry fair in January. Some of the money goes to local charities such as senior programs, hospice programs, food banks, and scholarships. In fact, Joe Bolchoz, said last year they donated over half a million dollars to 37 different charities.

The rest of the money raised goes to improve the fairgrounds.

While attendance wasn't as high as last year, the last night of the fair was very busy. Roads were so congested Saturday night that Highway 78 had to be closed for a while. Some people who had advance tickets weren't able to make it before the fairgrounds shut down.

Bolchoz advised if you have unused tickets, there are two options. You can get a refund at the fair office, or you can hang on to it and they will honor it next year.
