CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The theme of the day was to remember a hero, thank a hero, and be a hero. The Citadel believes that Heroism Day is just one way to reinforce the school's core values of honor, duty, and respect.

Laurence Hutto, professor of military science at The Citadel, said the college's largest community service project is about giving back. From a march across the Cooper River to area volunteer work, cadets did just that.

"We have cadets all over the Lowcountry that are giving back," he said. "This portion is in honor of our veterans with Veterans Day coming up on Friday."

Hundreds of cadets walked from The Citadel, over the Ravenel Bridge, to Patriots Point to show their appreciation for those who have served and are currently serving in our military.

ROTC Battalion Commander at The Citadel, Michael Fox, says that the veterans are not forgotten and that they are always going to be remembered.

"Everything they have done and what they are going to do if they are still in the military, we appreciate everything," he said.

Nearly 2,000 cadets participated in the project. Some helped to clean up the Shaw Community Center while others helped East Cooper Habitat for Humanity build a home.

Clay Frontz, Air Force Cadet Wing Commander at The Citadel, was one of the cadets that walked across the bridge this morning.

"We are showing that we can participate in other events besides just what we do on campus," Frontz said. "We are part of the community and we do care about our community."

Heroism day was named for former Citadel graduate Arland D. Williams. He was among the passengers on Air Florida flight 90 in 1982 when it crashed into the frozen Potomac River in Washington, D.C. He repeatedly passed a rescue line to other crash survivors before he died.
