CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- There's a question begging to be answered. What was he running from?

The man law enforcement officers say led them in a chase across three counties is in jail and on Saturday morning was denied bond.

Lonnie Lamar Hazelton was taken into custody late on Friday night. Deputies with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office say he crashed a car in a wooded area off Highway 17. Officials say Hazelton first carjacked a woman in Jamestown, crashed that vehicle in McClellanville, exchanged gunfire with Charleston County deputies and then carjacked another vehicle to make his way to Georgetown.

Hazelton received only minor injuries from the crashes. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has charged him with one count of carjacking, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Captain Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said the string of events is still being investigated by detectives. Watson said the first incident reported was in Berkeley County, where Hazelton allegedly carjacked someone before entering Charleston County and committing similar acts of violence.

Because shots were fired by an officer, the county has requested the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
