WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- Strolling through the annals of football in Colleton County, a quarter century of memories come back to Leroy Riley.
On Wednesday, Riley said he and the school had agreed that he will step down in May of 2012 as head football coach and athletic director.
His Cougar football team has not won a game the past two seasons, but those recent memories certainly won't overshadow his older ones.
"I don't think it ever really came down to wins or losses, but just the enjoyment of what you're doing," Riley said.
Being out in the country, he may not have been in the spotlight as much as his counterparts. But he's certainly built something special, from facilities to faces.
"Former players have gotten in touch to say it really made a difference in their life. Taught them more about life then just football," Riley said. "That has been a really rewarding and touching thing this week to experience."
He is at peace with this spot in Lowcountry football, orchestrating a state title in 1997 and coaching several future NFL players including Darwin Walker and Norman Hand.
Riley is bound to continue making a difference, even if his life is a bit different next fall.
"Little bit of sadness closing out something that's been very special to you, but very much at peace with it -- everything will work out for the best."
Riley says he will now look into pursuing some kind of work in ministry.
