CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Coins and dollars bills are the usual donations the Salvation Army receives as part of their Red Kettle Drive, but this year a special donation was hand delivered to a local office.

An engagement ring valued between two and four thousand dollars was donated.

The donor, who wants to remain anonymous, told Captain Tom Richmond at the Salvation Army when she dropped it off that she was inspired by her pastor at Seacoast Church. She said the pastor's message talked about the importance of helping the community this holiday season.

"This young lady listened to that message, prayed about it, talked to her family about it and she realized that all of us, including herself, have something more that we can do." Captain Richmond said.

The ring, along with the other money collected during the kettle drive, will help to buy food for people in the Lowcountry during the holiday season and also for the rest of the year. The money will also be used for emergency assistance when people need help making ends meet.

So far this holiday season, the Salvation Army has adopted 5,000 children through the Angel Tree program and over 7,000 people have received some sort of assistance with food. They will continue to help those in need thanks to the generosity of folks here in the Lowcountry.

"It's very inspirational because I know that they are trusting us to do what we say we are doing and that is doing the most good with the gifts that folks give to us," Richmond said.

As of Friday, the Red Kettle Drive is $1,000 ahead of where they were this time last year. Christmas Eve is the last day the bell ringers will be collecting money for the Salvation Army.
