Morning rumble in Summerville makes 4th minor quake since Dec. 7

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a 2.6 magnitude earthquake that happened in Summerville just prior to 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The rumble in Flowertown makes the fourth minor shakeup in the area in less than 30 days.

"There are some felt reports of shaking and shelves rattling but reports of damage, no damage would be expected from an earthquake of this magnitude," said College of Charleston Associated Professor of Geology Dr. Erin Beutel. "While this is the second small rumbler in the last month, there is no indication that this is unusual activity or any sort of precursor to more activity."

The most recent shake prior to Wednesday's was on Sunday, a 1.4 magnitude earthquake five miles outside of Summerville.

On December 21, 2011 the USGS reported a 2.6 magnitude earthquake that happened at 4:38 p.m. about eight miles east of Cottageville, S.C.

A 2.2 magnitude quake was reported on December 7 just outside of Summerville and about five miles from Ladson and Lincolnville.

"The Summerville/North Charleston area, the location of the 1886 magnitude 7.0 earthquake, has experienced background earthquake activity of this type since 1886. The number of background earthquakes varies each year, but there have been some years with none and some years with as many as 6 or 7," Dr. Beutel said.

On August 31, 1886 a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit Charleston. The quake killed at least 60 people and damaged more than 2,000 buildings.Damage happened as far south as the Savannah area.

"The simple fact that we continue to have these small earthquakes indicates that the faults are active and that we may experience a large earthquake in the future, however, there is no indication at this time that such an event is imminent."
