College of Charleston student found dead in apartment

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County Coroner's office is investigating the death of a 22-year-old College Of Charleston student.

The coroner says Thomas Newbern, from North Carolina was found dead in his on-campus apartment on George Street, around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Campus police searched the apartment after Newbern's parents alerted school officials that they were having trouble contacting him.

On Sunday, a coroner's office spokesman said it could take several weeks to determine Newbern's cause of death. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

According to a campus spokesman, Newbern was a History major and was in his senior year.
