Activists gather in SC for LGBT racism forum

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Racism and the role that race plays in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is the topic of a meeting in Charleston.

The Alliance for Full Acceptance is scheduled to host a forum Wednesday evening in the auditorium of the Charleston County Main Library.

Organizer Kyle Taylor says some minorities feel that the conversation about LGBT rights is primarily led by whites and hopes that the forum will identify ways to battle racism and homophobia in the Charleston area.

Speakers include Robert Arrington, pastor of the Unity Fellowship Church of Charleston and Sharen Mitchell, a local artist and advocate for LGBT civil rights.

The gathering is free and open to the public.
