CofC gets a head start honoring MLK

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – The recurring dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became loud and clear as the College of Charleston honored King with a ceremony and candlelight vigil.

"He went through a lot just for us and we should celebrate him because if it wasn't for him and other people, we wouldn't be where we are today," said Tamaiya Young, an 8th grader at Charleston Development Academy.

The ceremony, held Thursday night, honored King through song, poetry and prayer. Those in attendance spoke about the need for continuous peace and equality.

"Although we are all different, never the less, we are the same - members of the same human race. And each moment of the day is an opportunity for us to make the world a better place,"said Dr. John Bello–Ogunu, Chief Diversity Officer for the College of Charleston.

Charleston Development Academy's concert choir, the Singing Eagles, took part in the event.

"I tell the children, I was in the 11th grade the day he [King] was assassinated. So it's very vivid to me," said Sandra Barnhardt, director of the choir, as she reflected on the ceremony.

"Martin stood for peace, love, brotherhood, harmony. So basically, my whole repertoire of music that I share with the children are based on those themes," Barnhardt said.

On Monday, the college will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a day of service. Students and faculty will help the Charleston Children's Museum and the Charleston YWCA.
