CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- In front of many anxious reporters, students and GOP supporters Herman Cain made an endorsement on Thursday, just hours before the CNN debate.

Cain endorsed... "the people."

The room gasped as reporters from multiple news outlets tried to make sense of the announcement in the College Of Charleston's TD Arena. For weeks, it had been rumored Cain would endorse a candidate for the GOP nomination.

The goal, Cain said, was to drum up support for the "999 Revolution."

"We the people of this nation are still in charge," Cain said. "That's who I am endorsing because we are the ones who are going to have to lead this revolution."

When asked what he thought of people calling the announcement a stunt he replied, "The media is not going to like it, because it is not traditional. I am here to inspire the American people to believe they can impact this outcome."

Cain, who suspended his campaign several weeks ago after being accused of sexual harassment, called his announcement an "unconventional endorsement."

When asked why Cain chose Charleston for his unconventional endorsement he said, "I was available."
