Groups seek independent SC cruise terminal study

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Six neighborhood and other organizations in Charleston want an independent study of where South Carolina's new passenger cruise terminal should be built.

The South Carolina State Ports Authority is planning a $35 million terminal on the east side of the Charleston peninsula not far from the existing terminal. But the groups say there was never an independent study of what could be better locations.

Two of the groups who want the study have sued Carnival Cruise Lines alleging, among other things, the company's vessels are a public nuisance and illegal hotel operations.

Last week the state Supreme Court agreed to hear that case without it first going to a lower court.

Tourism is a $14 billion industry in South Carolina and cruises account for about $37 million of that total.
