CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- With a smile on his face, Abraham Williams gently tore down the white paper, uncovering a sign that bears his name. "Abraham's Closet" officially opened its doors Monday, with shelves fully stocked with new or gently used clothing. The only thing missing -- price tags.

Members from the Charleston Housing Authority (CHA) recently took a trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky. There, they were exposed to Mr. Williams' brainchild, Annie's Place, which provides free clothing, furniture and household goods to those in Bowling Green's public housing. When CHA members returned to the Lowcountry, they started to work toward a store of a similar kind.

"Times are hard," Williams said. "We decided to do this for those people who are unemployed, under employed, or simply just don't have extra money to give right now."

People who currently live in one of CHA's public or transitional housing complexes can shop there, as long as they meet certain income requirements.

"Maybe they're coming from a shelter, maybe they're on welfare, or maybe they need clothes to go do an interview," Williams said.

Abraham's Closet is located at 136 Alexander Street and is accepting donations.

"It won't take but just a little to keep this closet going. It won't take all the money you've got because if you're like me, you ain't got that much. But you've got something, you can give, but you've got something. You've got four or five coats, you can't wear but one at a time. There is something at your house that you don't give anymore, let's give it back," Williams said.
