Police release sketch of person possibly connected to string of downtown arson cases

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston Police Department have released the sketch of a man they think may have information to help solve an ongoing arson investigation.

Police department spokesman Charles Francis said the person is not a suspect.

Charleston Fire Department spokesman, Mark Ruppel said information sought could help the investigation into the string of arson cases in downtown Charleston.

There are little details available, but the man is described as black and about 35-45 years old.

Fire Marshall Mike Julazadeh said there have been more than 50 suspicious fires in the downtown area since 2003. Many started the same way -- on the porch during the dark hours of the morning.

A reward amount of $50,000 is being offered to anyone who may be able to provide information that leads to the arrest of a suspect.

Anyone who can identify the person in the sketch asked to notify the Charleston Police Department at (843) 577-7434 or the Arson Hot Line at 1-800-922-7766.
