SC councilman wants sheriff to drop weapons push

Posted: Updated:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The only Democrat on Spartanburg County Council wants the sheriff to stop encouraging people to obtain concealed weapons permits.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported that Councilman Michael Brown said he thinks Sheriff Chuck Wright's efforts are irresponsible.

Brown says his constituents think Wright's efforts promote an environment of lawlessness.

Wright said in October that women should obtain concealed weapons permits to fight back against crime. Wright spoke after an attempted rape.

Wright said Tuesday he's always said the use of weapons should be a last resort.

Nearly 650 Spartanburg County residents have applied for the permits since Wright's recommendation

Brown said it would be better for community leaders to spend time with at-risk young people rather than encouraging people to obtain weapons permits.
