NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- Leonard Nathaniel discovered two men, one armed with a gun, had broken into his home. What they didn't know is that Nathaniel had a gun as well.
North Charleston police were responding to a call of shots fired in Collins Park Villas near Dorchester and Michaux Parkway. On the way there, they saw a vehicle speeding down Dorchester Road. When the officers pulled the car over, they found 18 year-old Rashaun Dawson suffering from a gunshot wound. Dawson was then transported to MUSC.
Arriving at the original crime scene on Big Ben Court, police spoke to Nathaniel who told them that he had shot Dawson. Nathaniel was sleeping when a neighbor called to tell him two men were breaking into his home. He went downstairs and found Dawson, along with 19 year-old Andrew Smalls, going through drawers and cabinets in the kitchen.
When one of the suspects saw Nathaniel and pulled out a gun, Nathaniel went back upstairs, grabbed his gun, ran outside saw the two men around the corner of the building. Nathaniel then shot Dawson before getting into his car and fleeing the scene.
Smalls and Dawson got into their own vehicle and fled, and were stopped by police just a mile away near Scarsdale Drive.
A third suspect is being sought at this time.
Leonard Nathaniel is not facing any charges at this time.
Andrew Smalls is being charged with burglary in the first degree and failure to stop for blue lights.
Rashaun Dawson is being charged with burglary in the first degree, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
