CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Authorities are still on the lookout for a man who escaped from the Berkeley County Detention Center on Thursday.

Officials say 39-year-old James Sanders was able to hitch a ride from an unsuspecting driver after getting out of the facility and was dropped off near MUSC. He hasn't been seen since. Officials believe he still may be somewhere in downtown Charleston.

"We're still working leads, but don't have him in custody yet," said Berkeley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Moon on Sunday.

Charleston Police and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office are also assisting with the search.

Sanders was in jail on charges of criminal domestic violence. His alleged victim in the case is in protective custody.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Sanders, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
