BEAUFORT, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person is dead and three others flown to a hospital in Savannah after an ambulance ran off the road and struck a tree on Tuesday morning.
Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say the ambulance was traveling north on Old Sheldon Church Road when the driver lost control and overcorrected. As a result, officials say the ambulance struck a tree.
Beaufort County deputy coroner David Ott said the person killed in the accident was 56-year-old Blandelle Gary of Yemassee. Ott said Gary was riding in the passenger's seat of the ambulance as it was transporting her husband, who was in the back on a stretcher.
Those flown to the hospital were the driver and two passengers in the back of the ambulance.
