SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – After years and years of paperwork and trying, the necessary permits needed to move forward with the Berlin G. Myers Parkway extension may finally be coming together.
The roadway ends at East Carolina Avenue. With the extension, the road will go behind the high school and will come out on Highway 17A, below Orangeburg Road.
That extension, Mayor Bill Collins said, is important.
"It will help us a lot with traffic congestion, and it will be another evacuation route during a hurricane," he said.
Collins said $56 million has already been set aside for the project that has been in the works for a "very long time."
He said he is very optimistic the project will now move forward.
"We are back on track, and I think we're going to find a way out of this situation where we've been struggling with these permits for years."
The Dorchester County Penny Sales Tax helped fund the project.
