FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV)-- Runners took to the beach Saturday, some to meet their goals, some for the scenery, but all to help save the light.

The Save the Light Half-Marathon and 5K race was held to support the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Many runners took part for other reasons as well.

"It's a good half-marathon, flat course, not a lot of folks so it;s not crowded," said runner Patrick Welch. " The weather's perfect and the scenery is - well you can't get any better than Folly Beach really."

Funds raised by the race go to the stabilization and restoring process of the lighthouse.

The Save the Light Foundation was formed to keep the lighthouse from falling into the ocean. The foundation bought the lighthouse from the previous owner in 1999, then gave ownership to the State of South Carolina in 2000.

Save the Light still retains responsibility for planning, engineering, fund raising and preservation of the lighthouse.

The Morris Island Lighthouse operated from 1876 until 1962.
