NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – It's time for some of the toughest players in town to wear pink.

"I guess most people, when they think of hockey, they don't think of wearing pink or skating on pink ice," Stingrays forward Matt Scherer said. "It's a pretty tough thing, breast cancer, whether it be your mother, your daughter, your sister, everybody's been affected by it in some way."

Scherer said his aunt and friends back home have battled breast cancer. It's that personal connection that makes this game more meaningful for some of the Stingrays.

"It's a night, as players, we really look forward to going out on the ice and making a difference," he said.

Speaking of the ice, this is the sixth year for Pink in the Rink. Of course, the cool surface isn't the only pink touch for the game. On Wednesday, the 2012 special jersey was unveiled. The jerseys will be auctioned off live at the end of the game with proceeds going towards Susan G. Komen Lowcountry to help fight breast cancer.

In addition to the jersey auction, fans can support the cause by participating in the Pink in the Rink silent auction.

Scherer says fans that come out, won't be disappointed.

"On pink ice, we've been pretty successful in the past," he said.

The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, February 25 as the Stingrays face the Gwinnett Gladiators at the North Charleston Coliseum.
